Westmead Private Maternity Ward

The Brief

Health Projects International and Woods & Warner were engaged by Ramsay Healthcare to design a two-storey extension to the Maternity Ward at Westmead Private Hospital — a complex delivery that required the new building to be integrated into the existing facility at five independent connection points, while the hospital remained fully operational throughout construction.

The programme included 34 new maternity ward rooms with ensuites, refurbishment of 15 existing rooms, 8 parenting ward rooms, a 14-bay Special Care Nursery, new birthing suites, and supporting staff and education spaces. Every wet area surface needed to satisfy hospital-grade infection control, handle the intensive cleaning cycles of an active clinical environment, and still present a finish that felt appropriate for new parents — not a utility room.

Material Specification

Corian® Solid Surface — Raincloud

Stone was considered and set aside. The workability of Corian® was central to what the design team needed to achieve: basins, benchtops, downturns, and splashbacks fabricated as single monolithic units, with no junction between surfaces where bacteria could accumulate or cleaning protocols become harder to satisfy.

The project specified 42 Corian® 815 basins with integrated benchtops, splashbacks, and downturns; 14 custom square basins with downturns and splashbacks; and 4 baby bath basins — all in Raincloud. Staff station countertops, splays, and wet area benchtops were also specified in Corian® Raincloud, with integrated LEDs concealed within the fabrication.

Sharp edges and corners — a consistent hazard in stone and laminate installations — were eliminated through the fabrication process. Rounded profiles were built into every unit as standard.

Design Outcome

The monolithic fabrication approach removed every horizontal ledge and material junction from the wet area surfaces. Each basin-to-bench transition is seamless — no grout line retaining moisture, no edge detail trapping contamination, no join between the bowl and the surround that requires a separate cleaning protocol.

The integrated LED detail, concealed within the Corian® fabrication, produced a finish that the joiner, builder, client, and clinical end users all responded to positively. In the words of Sonia Warner of Woods & Warner: “Corian® has enabled typically clinical spaces to show a warm and homely feel whilst maintaining the high level of WH&S requirements for a hospital environment.”

Monolithic basin-and-bench fabrication eliminates the joins and ledges that complicate cleaning protocols in high-frequency clinical environments. Surfaces can be renewed on site if damage occurs, without full replacement.

Paediatric and special care environments
Rounded profiles and integrated basin design reduce sharp-edge hazards in environments where patient safety is a primary brief requirement. Baby bath and infant wash solutions can be fabricated to match the wider surface specification.
