Why it matters

The student bathroom upgrade at Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College won Australia’s Best Bathroom at Total Facilities 2018. Corian® Solid Surface washplanes and basins were made as seamless, integrated units flowing into wall and basin, reducing the maintenance demands of grout lines and joins.
For faster programmes, Corian® Finished Products – washplanes, basins and vanities – arrive finished and ready to install, including two-level washplanes with a lower basin height for younger students.
If vandalism or damage occurs, the affected area can be repaired and renewed rather than replacing the complete surface. Permanent marker can be removed with regular cleaning agents.

Chemical & stain resistance
Armstrong Parkin Architects specified Corian® Solid Surface for a Curtin University laboratory used by chemical and engineering researchers, for the chemical resistance and cleanliness the brief required. A seamless surface from sink to side drainer and splashback gives a homogeneous, non-porous bench that resists stains from common lab agents and can be washed and disinfected repeatedly without deterioration.
Welcoming, custom, seamless
At Western Sydney University’s vertical city campus in the heart of the Parramatta CBD, visitors are welcomed at a custom-built reception desk crafted from Corian® Solid Surface in Natural Grey. Designed by Woods Bagot and fabricated by Highland Interiors, it was chosen for its sleek, seamless appearance, durability and low-maintenance qualities – ideal for the high-traffic demands of a contemporary learning environment. Long-lasting, repairable and low-emission, it also supports the building’s 5-star Green Star credentials. It’s the kind of first impression we help design teams create for student services counters and reception points across a campus.
Thermoformed, seamless joinery
In the Monash University Learning and Teaching Building, curved ‘map tables’ were made by thermoforming segmented petals of Corian® Solid Surface and joining them seamlessly on site. At UTS, flowing banquette seating was formed in curves and joined seamlessly for a hard-wearing, easy-clean study space. At The Scots College, a curved, futuristic student help desk shows how open, approachable support spaces can be shaped in one continuous form. Wall cladding
At UQ’s Queensland Brain Institute, John Wardle Architects and Wilson Architects specified Corian® Solid Surface in Glacier White (matt) across three public spaces – the ground floor lobby, the researchers’ meeting platform and the upper level interaction area. Wall cladding was fabricated with inconspicuous joins so each wall reads as one continuous piece, flowing into fixed furniture with integrated drawers, equipment and upholstery.

FAQ
Lab benches take constant handling, chemical spills and heavy student traffic. Corian® Solid Surface is non-porous and solid all the way through, and sinks can be formed seamlessly into the benchtop and splashback, so there are no crevices for residue to collect. At Curtin University it was chosen for its chemical resistance, and at Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College custom lab sinks were selected over metal for their resistance to chemical corrosion.
Corian® Solid Surface is durable and repairable. Permanent marker can be removed with regular cleaning agents, and because the colour runs through the full thickness, scratches, marks and minor damage can usually be buffed out or professionally repaired on site – renewing the affected area rather than replacing the whole surface, with minimal disruption to the school day.
Yes. Corian® Solid Surface is GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions, so it supports healthier indoor air in classrooms, labs and other learning spaces where students spend long hours. It is also certified as a hygienic material to DIN EN ISO 846, and has been made with zero silica since 1967. View the GREENGUARD Gold certificate (PDF).
Day-to-day cleaning needs only warm soapy water or a common household cleaner. Lighter colours generally have a matte finish and need less attention to keep a uniform appearance. Maintenance staff can remove minor marks themselves by following our care & maintenance guide.
Yes. At the University of Queensland Brain Institute, Corian® Solid Surface wall panelling was installed with no open joins, flowing into fixed furniture. For interior wall applications, Corian® Solid Surface has been tested to AS 5637.1 (Group 2) – see the certificate (PDF).
Corian® Solid Surface comes in an extensive palette. Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College used Glacier White in its bathrooms and landscape, with White Jasmine and Concrete in the laboratories; the High School Laboratory pairs Domino Terrazzo with a Glacier White sink. View colours.
