Futuristic Student Help Desk

As technology becomes an everyday part of student life, schools are rethinking how support spaces are designed. Rather than traditional counters or closed-off rooms, there is a growing focus on environments that feel open, approachable, and easy to use—spaces where students can work, ask questions, and get help without hesitation.

This project involved the fitout of a circular room on the ground floor of the new John Cunningham Student Centre (JCSC) at Scots College, creating a futuristic-style Student Help Desk for computer repairs, technical support, and informal collaboration. Corian® Solid Surface was central to the design from the outset, selected for its ability to form smooth curves, seamless joins, and a clean, refined finish that supports a modern, technology-led environment.

The design positions a teacher at the centre of the room, with students standing and engaging around the perimeter. This circular layout improves visibility and interaction, allowing multiple students to be supported efficiently while maintaining a clear and organised flow within the space.

The name of the room, Broch & Pewter, draws on both language and heritage. It plays on the phrase “Broken Computer” while also referencing a broch—a prehistoric circular stone tower found in Scotland. “Pewter” nods to a material commonly used in 1600s Scotland for everyday life, religious purposes, and trade. Together, these elements create a subtle link between the school’s heritage and the contemporary, technology-driven interior.

Corian® in Glacier White allowed the design to be executed without compromise. Its versatility made it easy to curve and shape to suit the circular geometry of the room, while seamless joins reinforced the clean, continuous lines of the design. Integrated LED lighting was incorporated to enhance the futuristic, floating appearance of the help desk.

The finished space highlights the remarkable malleability of Corian®, resulting in a functional yet visually striking environment that has impressed students and staff alike. This project demonstrates how thoughtful material selection and innovative design can transform learning support spaces into areas that are both practical and inspiring.
