Tantalising Brutalism Kitchen

Tantalising Brutalism is an award-winning kitchen project by Annika Rowson of Rowson Kitchens, where material choice plays a defining role in shaping both the architectural language and everyday functionality of the space. At its centre sits a sculptural kitchen island crafted in Corian® Solid Surface — a piece that blurs the line between joinery, furniture and sculpture.

Project Overview

The kitchen was conceived as a bold, monolithic composition grounded in brutalist principles, yet softened through proportion, curvature and detail. The island acts as the focal point of the room, designed to feel intentional and continuous rather than assembled from individual components. Achieving this balance required a material capable of delivering complex form while remaining practical for daily use.

Material Choice

Corian® was selected for its ability to support seamless construction and sculptural expression. Its thermoformable properties allowed the island’s distinctive pillow-cushion folded geometry to be realised with precision, while inconspicuous joins ensured the form remained visually uninterrupted.

Beyond aesthetics, Corian® offers performance qualities well suited to kitchen environments. Its non-porous surface supports hygiene and ease of maintenance, while its repairable nature contributes to long-term durability. The colour Smokedrift Prima was chosen for its depth and subtle movement, enhancing the three-dimensional quality of the island and complementing the project’s refined material palette.

Integrated Design

Corian® is used holistically across the island, reinforcing a cohesive, single-material expression. The application includes:

  • The sculptural island form with softened folded edges

  • A fully integrated Corian® sink

  • Matching Corian® drawer fronts

  • A discreetly concealed power point to maintain clean visual lines

This integrated approach reduces visual clutter and allows the island to read as one continuous object, supporting both clarity of form and intuitive use.

Designer Insight

The significance of the island within the overall design is underscored by the designer herself:

“This award-winning kitchen with a brutalist aesthetic features a material palette of creamy neutrals, rich veneer & bronze hardware… The bold bullnosed Corian-clad island creates a statement in this space.”

Outcome

Tantalising Brutalism demonstrates how Corian® enables confident design outcomes where form, function and material integrity are equally important. Through seamless detailing, sculptural shaping and integrated functionality, the project shows how a single material can elevate a kitchen from a practical space into a defining architectural feature.
