Wantirna Residential Aged Care
Overview
Wantirna Aged Care Facility is a 120-bed development designed to support resident privacy, dignity and independence while enabling best-practice, home-like care. The facility accommodates a range of care needs, including a dementia-friendly environment, with design choices throughout aimed at optimising resident wellbeing through natural light, fresh air and views of the Dandenong Ranges.
The Brief
Aged care environments carry a distinct set of design and performance demands: surfaces must support residents with vision impairment and dementia, withstand constant use in communal kitchens, meet strict hygiene standards, and incorporate safety features like grab rails and anti-ligature detailing — all without compromising the home-like feel the facility was designed to achieve.
Material Specification
Corian® integrated vanity tops and basins were installed in every ensuite bathroom, with a deliberate colour pairing: Silver Grey basins against Glacier White benchtops and shroud. The contrast was a purposeful choice to aid residents with vision impairment. Grab rails and anti-ligature features are integrated into the design. In communal areas, Corian® was also used for kitchen benchtops.
Design Outcome
The tonal contrast between basin and benchtop gives residents a clear visual cue in the ensuite, supporting orientation and independence. In the communal kitchens, Corian®’s non-porous, hygienic surface holds up to the demands of a high-traffic, shared environment while keeping maintenance straightforward for facility staff.
Why It Works for Similar Projects
Aged care and healthcare projects share the same core requirements: hygiene, durability, and safety features that don’t read as institutional. Corian®’s non-porous surface, seamless joins and thermoformability make it well suited to integrated vanity and basin solutions where sanitation and safety detailing need to work together, while colour contrast can be used deliberately to support residents with vision impairment or cognitive decline.
