The Brief

Mori & Curll were engaged to design a podiatry clinic in Newcastle, NSW that challenged the assumption that medical fit-outs must be white, clinical, and devoid of character. The brief called for a space that would be warm and welcoming for both patients and staff — practical and hardwearing, but with genuine design personality. No white paint. Materials that could carry colour, texture, and detail without sacrificing the hygiene and durability demands of a healthcare environment.

Material Specification

Corian® Solid Surface in Glacier White was specified for benchtops and integrated sinks (PWD720L) throughout the clinic. The material was selected on the basis of cleanability, wearability, and hygiene — the non-negotiable requirements for any clinical environment. The fully moulded integrated sinks eliminate joins and crevices entirely, delivering the most hygienic possible surface between patients.

Glacier White provided a clean, resolved surface that worked with the warm material palette — mid-tone timbers, soft greens — rather than against it, without reading as the cold clinical white the design was specifically trying to avoid.

Design Outcome

The completed clinic breaks every expectation of what a medical fit-out looks like. Curved design details — a reception desk, a bordered vinyl floor finish — give the space a considered, resolved quality rarely seen in healthcare interiors. From the moment patients enter, the environment reads as calm and welcoming rather than sterile and transactional.

The Corian® surfaces have proven as practical as they are well-designed. Staff wipe down between patients in seconds; the treatment room resets immediately. The client’s response was direct: they couldn’t believe something this easy to maintain existed.
