Jets Club Ipswich

The Jets Club in Ipswich CBD worked with Paynters design team to revitalise an underused space in their clubhouse. The project involved demolishing an outdated service bar and opening up walls to let in more natural light. Artificial lighting was carefully designed to enhance the space, with a glowing bar and an oversized artificial skylight becoming key focal points. The backlit elements included adjustable dimming and colour temperature settings to create different atmospheres, making the space more inviting and visually striking.

Corian® Sandstorm was chosen for the project due to its flexibility in geometric form and its ability to be backlit. This versatile material was applied to key areas, including the backlit bar top, front and wall banner, back bar benchtop, and fascia to overhead planters. The seamless integration of Corian® within the design ensured a polished, high-end finish that elevated the club’s overall aesthetic.

One of the standout features of the project was the almost seamless inverted geometry of the bar front, enhanced by dynamic backlighting. The design and fabrication process posed significant challenges, particularly in minimising shadowing caused by the skeletal supporting framework. Additionally, thermoforming Corian® over a reversed imprint of the geometry required precision and expertise from the joiners and fabricators involved.

This project served as a valuable learning experience, demonstrating the remarkable ability to thermoform Corian® into intricate and complex shapes. The successful execution reaffirmed the notion that if a design can be conceptualised, it can be built. The final outcome exceeded expectations, with the Sandstorm colour and texture providing an outstanding visual and tactile appeal. The project not only revitalised the clubhouse space but also highlighted the innovative possibilities of Corian® in modern interior design.
