Potrero Hill Residence

The Potrero Hill residence, located in San Francisco is a renovation project that aims to rejuvenate a 1991 artist’s studio and dark room into a  2-bedroom residence that artfully marries elements of Japanese design with local and international influences. Designer, Brooke Aitken centered the project around an existing cherry tree, leveraging its natural beauty to inspire the interior décor and architectural details of the home.

The redesign of the Potrero Hill residence is deeply influenced by the serenity and meticulous craftsmanship associated with Japanese aesthetics. This influence is evident in the use of deep cherry hues that pay homage to the cherry tree on the property, while natural tones reflect the warm terracotta colours prevalent in San Francisco’s architectural landscape. Notably, these hues also nod to the iconic International Orange of the Golden Gate Bridge, thus creating a subtle link between the residence and its broader communal and geographical context.

The interior of the residence boasts a carefully curated selection of art and furniture that includes pieces by local San Francisco artists, as well as notable Australian and international creators. This eclectic mix not only enhances the visual appeal of the space but also fosters a conceptual harmony that bridges diverse cultures, echoing the global yet local character of San Francisco itself.

Innovative Use of Materials and Design

A standout feature of the residence is the sleek 12mm kitchen island, designed to resemble a folded origami sculpture. This piece highlights the innovative use of Corian® Glacier White, chosen for its malleability, lightweight nature, and ease of construction. These features facilitated the creation of complex angles and a distinctive sculptural form that becomes the focal point of the open-plan living space.

The complexity of the island’s design presented significant challenges during the construction phase, requiring a collaborative effort from a team of skilled professionals, including a master builder, cabinet maker, and Corian® fabricator. Their collective expertise and willingness to embrace a unique vision culminated in the successful execution of this ambitious design.

The project has been described as a labour of love, driven by a client whose faith in the vision allowed the design and construction team to persevere through challenges. The result is a space that not only fulfills the client’s aesthetic and functional requirements but also stands as a testament to the possibilities inherent in creative collaboration and material innovation.

Visitors and residents alike are drawn to the sculptural island, which has become a centrepiece not just in terms of design but also as a functional element of the home, where meals are prepared and enjoyed without concern for wear and tear, thanks to the durable nature of Corian®.

The Potrero Hill residence project exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform a space into a cohesive blend of art, culture, and innovation, making it not only a place to live but a space to inspire.
