Bentley Hospital in Western Australia has unveiled its new Midwifery Birth Centre — a landmark development in maternity care within WA’s public health system. This purpose-built centre is the first of its kind in the state to offer a fully midwife-led model of care for women with low-risk pregnancies, prioritising personalised, low-intervention births in a calm and supportive environment.
Why Corian® Was Chosen for the Birthing Pools
Each of the two spacious birth suites features a Corian® birthing pool — a standout design element that plays a key role in supporting water births and labour comfort. Corian® Solid Surface was chosen for its superior hygienic properties, seamless finish, and ease of cleaning — critical factors in a healthcare environment.
Unlike traditional materials, Corian® is non-porous and has no visible joins, meaning there are no cracks or grout lines where bacteria can harbour. This makes it ideal for birthing pools, where cleanliness, safety and infection control are paramount.
Beyond the practical benefits, Corian® is warm to the touch and smooth under hand, offering a soothing, gentle surface for labouring mothers. Its formability allows for ergonomic shaping — supporting a range of positions during labour — and the integrated design contributes to a calming, spa-like aesthetic that helps reduce stress and promote natural pain relief.
A Model of Holistic, Continuity-Based Care
The Midwifery Birth Centre at Bentley Hospital was designed with the needs of women and their families in mind. Alongside the birth suites, the centre includes consultation rooms, a midwives’ hub, and a family room — creating a welcoming, home-like space that fosters trust and connection.
One of the key aspects of the centre’s care model is continuity. Women are supported throughout their pregnancy, labour and early postnatal period by the same Credentialled and Endorsed Midwife, providing a consistent and personal approach to maternity care. For eligible women with low-risk pregnancies, water immersion using the Corian® birthing pools offers an additional option to help manage labour and support physiological birth.
Serving the Community with Accessible Maternity Care
Part of East Metropolitan Health Service, Bentley’s Midwifery Birth Centre is a valuable addition to the local health landscape. Women can self-refer to the centre, making it easier to access this model of care without a GP referral. As the first public facility of its kind in WA, it sets a new benchmark for maternity services in the state and demonstrates how design, material selection and care philosophy can come together to enhance outcomes for mothers and babies.
The role of Corian® in the project highlights its ongoing relevance in healthcare applications — offering both the functional performance and the warmth required for sensitive, high-touch environments like birthing suites.
