The Garden Magpies Waitara

At Magpies Sports Club in Waitara, a major upgrade has transformed the venue into a sophisticated destination featuring The Garden Bar, a space that brings together contemporary design and natural elements. With a series of staggered outdoor terraces, the bar invites visitors to relax, dine, and socialise in an environment that balances modern form with organic finishes. Curved joinery, lush foliage, and tactile materials such as terracotta and stoneware create a lively yet inviting atmosphere that enhances the community’s experience.

A key feature of the project is the striking bar counter, crafted from Corian® in the colour Carbon Concrete. This surface was chosen not only for its aesthetic qualities but also for its ability to seamlessly adapt to the curved shape of the benchtop and the multiple set-downs required for functionality, including the drink service at the beer font. The deep grey tones of Carbon Concrete were selected as a tribute to the darker timber finishes of the club’s previous Irish bar, while also providing a contemporary complement to the pressed copper sheeting of the bar front and the rustic turquoise subway tiles on the splashback wall. Together, these elements harmonise to create a balanced and visually rich focal point.

The installation process highlighted the versatility of Corian®, with most of the production completed off-site before final refinements were made during installation. Careful detailing ensured smooth transitions across joints, curves, and the waterfall edge, resulting in a seamless finish. The circular floor plan of The Garden Bar further enhanced the integration of the benchtop into the overall design, allowing the bar edge to act as a transitional element between indoor and outdoor spaces.

One of the project’s standout outcomes is the durability and longevity of Corian® Solid Surface in a high-use environment. Its homogenous structure allowed for fewer visible joins, providing both strength and aesthetic continuity. Importantly, its low-maintenance qualities mean that any wear and tear can be easily repaired or renewed, reinforcing its value as a long-term solution. The Carbon Concrete benchtop has become a grounding feature within the space, referencing natural masonry through its delicate veining and flecked surface. By anchoring the surrounding rustic and organic finishes, it successfully captures the design intent of The Garden: a contemporary yet timeless space for the community to enjoy.
