Ethereal Marine: A Modern Design Fusion

Designing a living space that perfectly encapsulates a client’s passions and preferences can be a challenging yet rewarding endeavour. In this case, Georgia Langridge from Modi Design took on the task of creating a kitchen and living space for a client who had two distinct loves: marine biology and rimu timber. Instead of shying away from what some might consider an “old-fashioned” choice, Georgia and her client embarked on a journey to reinvent this classic timber, seamlessly blending it with a more contemporary material. The result is the stunning Ethereal Marine design, a harmonious fusion of natural warmth and modernity.

Georgia’s client had a deep-rooted love for marine biology, and she wanted her living space to reflect that passion. Incorporating marine-inspired elements into the design was a must. However, the challenge lay in merging this aquatic theme with the traditional rimu timber, which has a reputation for evoking a sense of nostalgia and the past.

By pairing rimu with innovative design concepts, they were able to transform it from an old-fashioned relic into a fresh, contemporary design element. This reinvention of rimu set the stage for the entire project, creating a bridge between the past and the present.

The next challenge was to find a material that could complement the rich, warm hues of rimu while injecting a contemporary and marine-inspired aesthetic. Enter Corian® Dune Prima, a versatile material with textural and tonal variations that perfectly capture the essence of modernity. It also provides a soft tactility reminiscent of sand and seashells, aligning with the marine biology theme. The marriage of rimu and Corian Dune Prima creates a harmonious balance, where neither material becomes diluted or lackluster.

Georgia Langridge’s Ethereal Marine design is a testament to the power of creativity and innovation in interior design. By fearlessly embracing the “old-fashioned” and infusing it with modernity, Georgia and her client have created a living space that pays homage to marine biology while reinventing the traditional rimu timber. The choice of Corian® Dune Prima as a complementary material was a stroke of genius, ensuring that the design achieved a harmonious balance.

This project not only showcases the ability to bring together seemingly disparate elements but also emphasizes the importance of personal passions and preferences in the design process. It serves as a reminder that with the right vision, any material or concept can be transformed into something beautiful, innovative, and timeless.
