Chifley Tree Table

8 Chifley is a striking architectural landmark in Sydney’s CBD, originally designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. The latest phase of the project enhances the public plaza, creating a more inviting and functional space for people to gather, relax, and enjoy the city’s dynamic atmosphere.

With an emphasis on pedestrian accessibility, the revitalised plaza integrates a variety of seating options and additional greenery to foster a comfortable and engaging environment. At the heart of this transformation is the Tree Table — a sculptural, sinuous seating installation designed to encourage social interaction while blending harmoniously with its surroundings.

The choice of Corian® Everest for the Tree Table was driven by both practical and aesthetic considerations. In a constrained urban setting, the material’s ability to be fabricated seamlessly without visible joints was crucial. Additionally, the solid surface was light enough to be installed on the existing structural slab without imposing excessive load constraints. Its durability and resilience in public spaces further reinforced its suitability for the project.

The Tree Table was meticulously crafted to accommodate a variety of users, from individuals seeking a quiet retreat to small and larger social gatherings. Its distinctive tulip-like legs and flowing curves contrast yet complement the geometric architecture of the surrounding space. The design also cleverly integrates planting areas, providing soil depth for greenery that enhances the vibrancy of the plaza.

The development of the Tree Table required multiple design iterations and prototypes, particularly in refining the edge and lip detailing. Ensuring a seamless and organic form was essential to achieving the desired aesthetic while maintaining structural integrity. This commitment to design excellence extended beyond visible elements, with meticulous attention to hidden details that contribute to the overall experience of the piece.

Ivan Harbour, the original project architect, highlighted the ongoing evolution of 8 Chifley’s public realm:

“The agora at 8 Chifley was designed to be multi-faceted — a commuter shortcut, a grand portico, a meeting place, and a space for people-watching. When we conceive buildings, we do so with the understanding that they should never be static monuments but dynamic and responsive to the evolving city. Mirvac and Aspect Studios’ ongoing stewardship keeps this space fresh and relevant. The latest work brings another level of intimacy to the agora and, with its splash of colour, smiles to our faces.”

The Tree Table at 8 Chifley is a testament to thoughtful design, material innovation, and the power of public spaces to enhance urban life. The versatility and durability of Corian® played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life, ensuring a functional and aesthetically captivating addition to Sydney’s CBD.
