Alfred Lane House Infectious Diseases

The Alfred Lane House Infectious Diseases Project at the Alfred Hospital has transformed a once under-utilised 1960s brick building into a modern, inclusive space that is designed to facilitate the recovery and rehabilitation of HIV-positive patients. This newly developed space supports an innovative model of care that allows patients with compromised immune systems, who often spend extended periods in Intensive Care, to access an intermediary clinical space before transitioning back home. The six-bed unit offers a comfortable, home-like environment that feels more therapeutic than a traditional inpatient ward, while still providing access to world-class medical treatment and research facilities.

The design of the ward places an emphasis on wellness, using calming green tones, timber-look finishes, and soft interior curves to create a soothing atmosphere. Large windows flood the space with natural light, offering views of nearby parks and heritage buildings. In line with salutogenic and biophilic design principles, the interior fosters healing by reducing stress and creating a peaceful, nurturing environment. The ward includes a therapy gym, a patient lounge, and kitchen facilities, in addition to six single bedrooms and the necessary support spaces, such as a medication room and utility areas. Adjacent to this clinical space, a newly developed office houses infectious disease clinicians and researchers, ensuring that patients remain close to the care and expertise they need.

Corian® Solid Surface was chosen for this project due to its outstanding performance in healthcare environments. In particular, Corian® Everest was selected for the staff station in the Nurses’ hub and the kitchen benchtop. The seamless, non-porous nature of Corian® made it an ideal choice for an infectious diseases unit, as it is easy to clean and helps to prevent the spread of infection. Its durability and ability to be moulded into a continuous surface ensure it can withstand the demands of a clinical setting while maintaining a homely aesthetic. The choice of Corian® Everest, with its slightly warmer tone than true white, helped to further soften the space, reducing the sterile feel often associated with hospitals and creating a more comforting, inviting environment for patients.

The installation of the Corian® units came with some challenges due to the size of the pieces and the logistics of delivering them through a functioning hospital. However, the pieces were successfully delivered and finished on site, resulting in a flawless integration of the material. One of the most notable aspects of the project was the extensive co-design process, which involved both staff and patients. Their input was instrumental in shaping the final design, particularly the wide curves and integrated lighting in the staff station. These design elements were introduced to minimise light pollution during sleeping hours, addressing patients’ feedback for a softer, more restful environment.

The use of Corian® Solid Surface has not only contributed to the aesthetic and functional success of the project but also aligns with the hospital’s commitment to sustainability, thanks to its low-VOC properties and recyclability at the end of its life.
