Concave profiling is a specialised design technique used to create smooth, inward-curving surfaces on Corian® Solid Surface. This method enhances both the aesthetic and functional aspects of a design by introducing soft, flowing curves that seamlessly integrate into various applications.
Concave profiles add a sophisticated and sculptural element to interior and exterior spaces. The curved recesses create depth and shadow effects, making surfaces appear more dynamic and elegant. This technique is often used in contemporary and minimalist designs, where seamless, flowing transitions are key.

Fluted profiles work across most solid surface colours, and the choice of colour can dramatically shift the mood of the design. Deeper and veined colours add richness and drama to fluted applications — the interplay of light and shadow across the profile brings out the movement in the colour in a way that flat panels simply can’t achieve. Lighter, more uniform colours offer a cleaner, more minimal aesthetic. Matte and semi-matte finishes are generally preferred over gloss, as they accentuate the tactile, three-dimensional quality of the profile without unwanted light reflection.
Flute depth, width, and spacing all need to be considered relative to the overall panel size. Very fine, closely spaced flutes require more precision and may add to fabrication cost, while deeper flutes reduce the remaining material thickness at the base. Corian® solid surface sheets are 12mm thick, which accommodates decorative fluting comfortably across a wide range of profile depths and spacings. Working with your fabricator early in the design process ensures your chosen profile can be realised exactly as intended.
Yes — this is one of the material’s key advantages over timber or plasterboard alternatives. Solid surface is non-porous, so fluted wall panels, vanity fronts, and bath surrounds are fully suitable for wet area specification. Joins between fluted panels should be detailed carefully by the fabricator to maintain waterproofing, as the profile adds complexity compared to a flat panel join.
Solid surface offers significant practical advantages. Unlike timber, it won’t swell, warp, or delaminate in humid environments. Unlike plaster, surface damage — scuffs, scratches, or marks — can be sanded back and refinished in situ without replacement. This makes it particularly well suited to high-traffic hospitality, healthcare, and commercial interior applications where longevity and ease of maintenance are priorities.
Yes, and this is where the design potential becomes particularly interesting. Fluted profiles can be designed to incorporate shadow gaps that conceal LED strip lighting, creating a dramatic lit reveal effect. Colour-contrasting inlays can also be routed and filled to introduce a second tone within the fluting pattern. These details require close collaboration with your fabricator early in the design process, and CASF’s Design Solutions Service can assist with translating the concept into a technically resolved specification.
