Tokyo Kushi Bar

With a large open area, Tokyo Kushi bar stands out from the others by using DuPont™ Corian® as the main material to form pillars that are translucent.  The glowing pillars double as signage for the store and draws attention from all the pedestrians who pass by. The design of the shop expresses the natural phenomenon of how water and oil separate when mixed together.  This is also the characteristic of the water fryer used in cooking skewers.  Moreover, the design is also an imagery of sky and cloud.

Tokyo Kushi bar sits within a few minute walking distances from the JR Shinbashi station where the area is full of restaurants.  Unlike traditional restaurants, Tokyo Kushi Bar is a “standing” skewer bar where food lovers stand instead of seated to enjoy refined skewers. The nature of standing restaurant is to allow the customers to watch how their food is cooked, thus, the customers can enjoy both the “visual” and “taste” part of the food.

The pillars in the store resemble light rays that pass through the cloud. It could have been natural stone or cloth. But in the end, DuPont™ Corian® was chosen because not only solid surface is a material with matching aesthetics, but also Corian® is strong against oil and dirt.

“Honestly speaking, I was not clear about how DuPont™ Corian® is translucent. However, the moment I saw the pillar prototype made with Glacier Ice, the translucency struck me and I have decided this is the one!” Mr. Imafuku who dealt with various lights in his works felt that the essence of space design is on the use of light.

“By using DuPont™ Corian®, the light became mellow, and the skin of the person was reflected smoothly and gently.  I’m satisfied with the performance of Corian®.  It is a very effective material to express the softness of the light.  When the temperature and hue changes, the softness of light still remains. It is certainly a very interesting material.”

Photo from front side: White colour in the shop was adopted as the basic tone to emphasize the characteristic that oil does not stick to Corian® surface.  The depth of the space is created by placing pillars of light randomly.

Photo from side: The pillars of light with DuPont™ Corian® were prevented being uneven in thickness by thermoforming and seamless joining in three different lengths.  With special fabrication technique, the pillars are able to shine homogeneously with seamless curve.

Applications:

  • Backlit
  • Column Cladding
  • Servery Top
  • Thermoformed
